Hey all,
I'm pretty new to the cafe sport, but dig what you guys have to advise. I have a '79 r65 that I am currently strip'n and caf'n. I need to replace a simple rear flat, but don't really know how to remove the rear tire/rim. I am basically learning as I go with this bike. Maybe I am just a bit afraid of sending myself flying once I get everything back together. Any advice on the simplest and safest way to fix a rear flat on a r65? Also, I would like to remove and clean the top clamp, but again do not want to create a death machine once back together. Any advice on the two things I posted or any cafe boxer ideas would be awesome and greatly appreciated!

Take what I say knowing that I assume your 79 R65 is built in a similar fashion to my 77 R75... but keep in mind that the R65 is the one model that universal parts for most BMW's don't fit.
The rear wheel
Put the bike on the center stand, the BMW stands are usually at the balance point but if the bike is leaning backwards brace the back up by stacking wood, using a scissor jack etc to the frame just behind the stand.
Remove the nut from the right side of the axle, right in the centre of the rear drive
Loosen the retaining bolt where the axle passes through the swing arm on the left side
Using a screw driver placed through the hole in the left end of the axel start turning and pulling the axle out towards the left. You may have to remove the left silencer to do this (two alen heads running verticle half way back on the inside and the clamp near the left foot controls)
The wheel will simply pull off the rear drive now. Wiggle it left, back and down... getting the tire past the drive can be a bit tricky... sometimes letting air out to soften things up helps.
Take this opportunity to grease the spline gear in the rear drive that is now exposed. Honda Moly Paste is the best stuff for this. Also check your brake pads.
Actually fixing the flat... well that depends on what caused the flat in the first place... and if your need a new tire take it to a shop to have it mounted and balanced.
For the triple clamp I will simply say... Buy a manual! This is not hard but I couldn't write it all down even if I remembered every step along the way ;D
